BOS-PRD-0303.901001

Methods of collection and storage can be divided into two groups; the disposal of waste onshore and the

processing of waste onboard.

Appropriate onboard procedures

shall

be developed and followed for each situation (type of vessel, number

of passengers onboard, type of navigation).

All garbage

shall

be handled according to instructions given in the Garbage Management Plan.

The discharge of waste at sea when authorised, or otherwise in port,

shall

be logged in the

Garbage Record

Book

.

A person or persons

shall

be designated as responsible for collecting waste and maintaining equipment in

each department (deck, engine, and galley).

Waste disposal into the sea can only be done after the

shall

only grant permission after ensuring that overboard disposal is legal with

regard to the position of the vessel and type of waste.

When discharge from any processing equipment into the sea is planned, the vessel position during discharge

is to be verified and recorded as required

As per Company’s environmental policy, the vessel

shall

take appropriate actions in order to reduce waste

onboard. Thus all vessels

shall

specify in ODA or in the

Environmental Monthly Report

the amount of waste

generated classified by category. This allows the implementation of a policy of waste reduction by the

Company.

4.3.1 Garbage collection

Collection of waste pending offloading

shall

take into account local conditions. The procedures

shall

be

adapted to the reception facilities available onshore.

Some countries have special sanitary regulations and may require special disposal methods; for example

incineration or sterilisation of food waste and associated packing materials in order to prevent risk of disease.

Waste materials

shall

be segregated and collected using containers that are easy to handle and maintain.

As per MEPC 201(62), the garbage is now defined in 9 categories:

A. Plastics;

B. Food wastes;

C. Domestic Wastes;

D. Cooking Oil;

E. Incinerator ashes;

F. Operational wastes;

G. Cargo Residues;

H. Animal Carcass(es);

I. Fishing Gear.

The containers

shall

be colour coded for the content as following (associated with the corresponding new

garbage categories):
