During retrieval, Person tasked with tending the stretcher will guides the tag-line off the deck and
then leave the hoisting zone.

4.1.6.1 Preparation
Insofar as possible, the vessel
should
inform the helicopter crew of the total weight to be transferred
(stretcher and casualty).
When transferring to the vessel, it is important to remember that sling carries a 10 kg weight and a hooking
device allowing attachment and detachment of the payload.
Payloads may be transferred using palettes, nets (e.g. for bulk materials), or slinging devices with several
cables for large oversize loads.
When packing nets, special care
should
be taken to avoid shifting when the load is landed.
4.1.6.2 Attaching the payload
Before arrival of the helicopter, the stretcher
should
be prepared and moved to the hoisting zone.
The
AB
should
stand by near the hoisting zone, ready for the
Ch
ie
f Off
icer’s
instructions.
After stabilizing the sling above the payload and with the Authorization by
Ch
ie
f
Off
icer
, the load can be
attached as follows:
1) Deck team takes position beneath the helicopter.
2) Bosun grounds the hook by touching with the static discharge rod that has been clamped to the
vessel.
3) Bosun tasked with grounding puts the static discharge rod down and holds it on the deck with one
foot then picks the sling up so that the cables are straight. When standing on the cable, the bosun
must stay alert of the helicopter’s movement.
4) Bosun in charge of attaching the payload places the hook in the ring holding the stretcher.
When the hook has been firmly attached and can be clearly seen by the

ie
f Off
icer
, the

regulatory “OK” hand signal to the helicopter crew and the

. At the same time the deck team
withdraws without further instructions.
Hoisting
should
not begin until personnel have withdrawn from the hoisting zone and the helicopter is
positioned vertically over the payload.
4.1.6.3 Detaching the payload
When the vessel is ready, the helicopter approaches under guidance by the
Ch
ie

icer
.
1) After the payload has been landed, the helicopter has stabilized, and the pilot has given “OK” hand
signal, the
Ch
ie

icer
will instruct the deck team to take position under the helicopter.

5) The

gives the regulatory “OK” hand signal to the helicopter crew as well as the deck
team. At the same time the deck team withdraws without further instructions.
If the helicopter pilot decides to release the sling, he will first inform the

who will
prevent the deck team from taking position in the hoisting zone.
4.1.6.4 Safety instructions
The hazards associated with rotor downwash and vessel movement (falling), static electricity discharge
(electrical shock), and swinging or sudden disconnection of the payload (falling objects) can be minimized by
strict application of procedures.
