The berthing operation

shall

be fully planned if applicable in conjunction with the pilot or

Moorin

g

Master

.

The factors for a safe berthing operation include:

x

The speed of approach to the berth;

x

Angle of approach to the berth;

x

The wind force and direction;

x

Tide / current conditions;

x

Use of anchors.

When, eventually after consultation with the

P

ilot

or

Moorin

g

Master

, final details of the mooring operation

are known, the

Master

shall

instruct the officers or other responsible persons who are to supervise the

mooring operation fore and aft, on details of the mooring arrangements.

The instructions

shall

include:

x

The use of any tugs, their position and means of making fast;

x

The mooring layout to be used;

x

Sequence of running lines;

x

Safety precautions to be observed during the operation;

x

Position and method of rigging gangway or other access.

The mooring layout

shall

make best use of the mooring lines available. When the ship is fitted with wire and

synthetic rope moorings then it is often best to use the wires for springs and polypropylene breast lines and

the synthetic lines for headlines and stern lines. Whenever possible lines leading in the same direction

shall

be the same length and be made of the same material and construction. Mixed moorings, wire with synthetic

or wire or synthetic rope alone but with differing construction

shall

NOT be used in the same service.

The lead of the line to the shore

shall

also be considered. Whenever a line is unable to act in exactly the

same direction as the force it is trying to withstand, its holding power is reduced. The effectiveness of any

line is proportional to the cosine of the angle the line makes with the keyside. A line at twenty degrees

shall

be 94% effective, while a line at an angle of fifty degrees

shall

only be 64% effective.

Use

shall

be made of any berth information available from previous calls at the same berth.

The

Master

is responsible for ensuring that sufficient personnel are assigned to each mooring station.

When mooring stations are called by the

Master

, the Officer or other person in charge of each station

shall

brief the mooring party as to the safety and mooring requirements. Each person

shall

be checked to ensure

correct wearing of personal safety equipment such as suitable clothing, safety shoes, gloves, safety hat etc.

The ford mooring party

shall

also be provided with goggles in the event the anchor has to be used during the

mooring operation - planned or unplanned.

The mooring stations

shall

be prepared and ready for use prior to arrival of the ship at the berth.

Communication links with the bridge

shall

be tested. Lines run out

shall

be clear of the main working areas
