)
In many cases when working with hazardous substances it is a requirement to wear specialist/specific extra
PPE beyond the Company basic working minimum PPE requirements. In such a case it is critical that the
correct PPE is selected for the particular material (e.g. gloves and respirators do not have universal
application). In addition to correct selection, PPE
shall
be available for use when required and
shall
be
maintained in good condition. Where PPE is used, it is essential that employees are properly instructed in its
use.

For the information provided to be effective, training is necessary for all employees who may be exposed to
chemicals or other hazardous substances in the work place. Taking into account the level of risk identified in
the risk assessment, training
should
be adapted to meet the specific needs of staff that have been identified
as requiring training as well as induction training for new employees.
When determining the level of training required for existing and new employees the following
should
be
considered:
x
The hazard associated with the hazardous substance to be used;
x
The complexity of the work processes;
x
Any controls, work practices and PPE which may be required to minimize the risks.
Existing and new employees need to be able to recognize and interpret information on any hazardous
substances in the work place, therefore training programs
shall
incorporate the following:
x
Labelling of containers of hazardous substances, an explanation of the information that each part of
the label provides and why the information is being provided;
x
How to access MSDS and the information that each part of the MSDS provides;
x
Information about hazardous substances to which employees are or may be exposed in the course
of their work;
x
Work practice and procedures dealing with handling, use, storage, cleaning up and disposal;
x
Measures used to control exposure:
Proper use of PPE;
Procedures to be followed in case of an emergency involving hazardous substances;
Incident reporting procedures.
