The
Hazard Hunt
is a prevention tool to identify potential hazards that are often overlooked by the
employees working in the specific areas and eliminate them before the hazard results in a near miss or in an
incident. Indeed, safety hazards sometimes go unnoticed, either because we forget to look for them, or
because they become lost in the larger picture of production.

Hazard hunts
have to be planned in advance to allow enough time and ensure the crewmembers are
available for the whole exercise.
Crewmembers have to inspect another area that their usual one. Example: Engine room crewmembers
should
inspect deck or accommodation areas, crewmembers from deck
should
inspect engine room or
bridge, etc…
Keep in mind hazards can be linked to health, safety, security or environment.
Take pictures of the hazards found to fill the hazard register and to build up a library to share later (during
HSE meetings).
Once Hazard Hunt is completed, results and pictures have to be recorded in the Hazard Hunt Register and
to be managed and properly followed-up (corrective action planned, implementation date recorded, etc.).
